9 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 9th [February 1902]. I went to church in gondola & walked home round by the Piazza & accompanied Mrs Eden to her door. As I passed the shop I enquired for the modelling wax I had ordered some time ago & found to my great satisfaction that it had come so I carried it with me & got home by abt 12. Prof. Trombini came to make photographs of the cast of Byron’s bust & of the terra cotta bust of an Englishman of last century who had been in the service of the Republic– He also lunched with us & afterwards he helped Emilia & me to rearrange the contents of the 4 glass cabinets Spanish Urnas in the long hall wh took us till 4 oclock when he left & Emilia & I went off to pay a visit to Baroness Reinelt at the Hotel Vittoria. She gave us tea & I helped her & showed her the way to make it wh was to her a mystery. Mme Herasti (the Dss of Madrid’s lady in waiting) also came looking beautiful with her lovely white hair & black eyes & she was very lively & pleasant. The old Marchesina A. Bentivoglio came also—& then Avv. Valsecchi so there was a pleasant little reunion– We returned home abt 5.30 & I read aloud to Emilia, the Vita Privata & also the French translation by Binet of Virgil’s Giorgias.
