10 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 10th [February 1902]. Having got my wax I worked at the bas relief of the Virgin & Child I am doing to put into the little shrine in the Calle which leads to this house from the Campo S. Polo. It was such a foggy day that we neither of us went out & I read aloud & worked as soon as it grew dark. At 11.30 we went off in gondola to the Fenice to the Cavalshina which had been got up for Charity and where I had taken a box. This cost 30 lire & 5 each ticket d’entrata. I had also invited Hilda Montalba & Miss Halsey & had also accepted Countess Anina Morosini’s invitation to go to her box part of the time & Bss Reinelt had done this also. They came late but as I had my box it did not matter. All Venice society was there– The ladies of the committee went about selling lottery tickets– Others superintended different sales on the stage. The theatre was all lighted à giorno that is with hundreds of candles—the boxes were full of smart ladies—the pasterre was boarded over for dancing & the whole scene was very animated– There were not many masks & what there was was not very remarkable. Mr Montalba took me down to the pasterre & on to the stage where there was a well very prettily arranged with irons & pully above by which the presents were brought up for the pesca for which one paid 2 lire a fishing. To me though the scene was animated the whole thing was dull– I thought Countess A. Morosini was tiresome & vulgar & both I & the Bss were out of spirits so after paying a visit or two we returned home & got to bed at 2 A.M.
