20 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th [February 1902]. Worked hard at bas relief. Went out after lunch paid a visit to Baroness Reinelt & assisted at a fancy scene between her & 2 strange ladies who came to beg for the poor & whom the Bss politely refused to their discomfiture. Being so very rich she is set upon on all sides for charities but wisely declines to give where she does not know the object. It was a heavenly day the sun quite warm. I took a walk on the Riva & then went at 5 to tea with Mrs Hulton & came home latish after wh Mme le Mallier called. In the evening I went to a party at Countess Miari who had an upper apartment in the Palazzo Trevisan Capello—the house wh Ba Capello bought for her father. The Miari are young & rich & have done up their house with great luxury & some taste. They have a fine dining room with a minstrel’s gallery. All Venice society was there & smoking to my great discomfort. Signor Ehrenfreund sang—a large voice not pleasant nor harmonious but a good musician. Bono (a naval officer) played very prettily on the violin. Bss Reinelt was at the party resplendent in a low gown black with steel spangles & lovely pearls round her neck.
