26 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th [February 1902]. Went out directly after lunch & picked up Signor Guggenheim & he took me to the Armenian school in this town that I might present to the Armenian fathers 3 old Armenian MSS which belonged to Henry & which he must have got while at Constantinople. I think it is best that they should be deposited where they are understood & appreciated so I gave them as a remembrance of him. A 4th MSS Guggenheim begged me to give to the Correr Museum wh I did with a collection of Spanish combs wh are interesting for the history of costumes. The Director of St Raphael the Armenian school received me & my offering with effusion & gave us liqueur & sweets in the Oriental fashion & then showed us over the palace in wh they live. It was anciently Palazzo Zenobio & had a magnificent ball room with a music gallery—all splendidly ornamented with fresco paintings by Tiepolo. They took me upstairs to a room which has pretty low relief stucco ornaments & which was an old alcove or bedroom with a recess for a bed on the ceiling of which are amorinis &c—this the good fathers have used as a little chapel & it is curious to think on the different scenes that the amorini now look down upon. There is also a charming little garden behind the Palace at the end of wh is a building built for the library of the family—now empty. From here we went in to the cloister of the Carmine & saw the school of art which is held under Signor Guggenheim’s directing—some of the drawings & modelling is excellent & one sees how intelligent a race is the Italian.
