27 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 27th [February 1902]. Went out after lunch to call on Signor Malagola & to tell him that Murray says the cast of the bust is not Byron. Called also on Mme Rubini & on the Reinelt who was out. I went on foot to the Piazza to get some exercise & tried to find the Harstons who were not in so I went home. In crossing the Traghetto I saw Bss Reinelt pass by with Css Morosini so they stopped & came in to tea with me. The Harstons came later & gave me an extra ticket for the Liceo concert tonight so I sent off to invite 2 Montalbas to go with me. Iduna Bel came to dine & I took her, Clara & Hilda to the Fenice where the concert was held—& for wh the Prefect had given me his box. We had the famous french pianist Raoul Pugno—with orchestra accompaniment. Pugno has wonderful execution but is very French in his ways, throwing his hands about in an affected manner. He is enormously stout & one wonders he can reach the piano round such a protuberance. The public received him without enthusiasm & Wiel told us that he was furious & says he will never return here. The theatre was full. We were next box to the Morosini who to my annoyance never stopped talking the whole time.
