1 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 1st March [1902]. Began the month with lovely weather. The sun was so hot at 10 o’cl that the damp exterior walls of the house were steaming & I fancied that smoke must be coming out of the 1st floor windows & sent my maid in all haste to see. However later on the day clouded & there was a thunderstorm abt 6 oclock wh we may hope will turn the scale & bring us some brighter weather. I went out in gondola to Piazza & took a walk till the rain drove me home. Mme Fortuny came to see me & also the Signori Vianello who live in the Ca’ Benzon Mr Malcolm’s old house, & later the Dss della Grazia. She came again at 7.30 to fetch me to go to a musical soirée at Mme le Mallier. The Guarneri couple played & began with an excruciatingly unpleasant modern sonata by               . Then Css Albrizzi & Mme Bompard sang a duo by Offenbach & another Italian one– Css Albrizzi is well taught but her voice is passé & must always have been unpleasant & strident. After a pause & refreshments the Guarneri played the Kreuzer Sonata very beautifully & then Mme Bompard sang & at nearly 1 A.M. we went home to our beds—I for one very sleepy.
