2 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 2nd March [1902]. Went to morning service & walked after with Carry Eden to her door & then on to the Piazza where I met Bss Reinelt & took a couple of turns in the sun. It was a most magnificent day all too hot & like summer in England. I accompanied her to her hotel & sat a little while chatting. She talked of the ways the of the ladies of society & said She ne suis pas jeune, je ne suis pas prude je connais le monde, mais ce que j’ai vue içi surpasse tout et est incroyable”—so it would seem that it is not from my northern stupidity that makes me horrified at the ways of people here. I walked home over the Rialto just in time for 1 o’cl lunch. At 4 I went out in gondola to Bompards studio where he & his wife were having a farewell party as they leave Venice this week. Met there the 3 Montalbas girls & brought them home to tea with me. At 6 Clara & I went across the canal to call on the Dss di Noci (nee Mocenigo). There we found her in a tiny mezzanin room with the Duke della Grazia each smoking a cigarette. It appears he goes there every day that he is in Venice. As they are neither of them young there is no wrong in it but it seems to me foolish. The house is still full of nice things & the Duchess has good taste & adds to them. The stuccoes in low relief are very fine & in good preservation. When I had taken Clara home to her house on the Zattere I returned to read a letter from Rome from Mrs Curtis saying she was not pleased with Sophy Palmer’s state & I am so anxious about her that after a little thought I determined to go off to Rome to see her. I am loathe to move from here but feel I ought to go tho’ it costs me a struggle & I sat down & wrote to Rome to say I will go on Thursday wh day the Canevaros are travelling from here & I can go with them.
