5 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 5th [March 1902]. Henry’s birthday. I finished my bas relief of the madonna & Child ready to be cast. I sat also to Ellen Montalba for the hands of my portrait by her & she stayed to lunch with me leaving directly after. I went to call on Mrs Harston & on Marchesa Cassis where I had tea—then walked home from the Piazza stopping at Hotel Vittoria to bid Bss Reinelt goodbye. Packed for tomorrow’s journey. At 7.30 Iduna Belmondo & Mr Montalba dined with me & I took them to hear La Principe de Baghdad played by Jane Hading. It is an old fashioned piece & not very interesting but she acted very well—& is certainly a very handsome woman—with a pale face & large brown eyes. She is 43 & therefore not in the zenith of her beauty. She was beautifully dressed—most extravagantly fashionable. The men were detestable. We got home at 11.30.
