17 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th [March 1902]. Woke with a headache & great exhaustion. Slept most of the day till 3.30 when Iduna Bel: came & we had tea & I was much better. I got up in time for 7.30 dinner & at 8.30 went in gondola to fetch Iduna & we went to the B. Marcello concert at the Pal. Pisani to hear Becker the violoncellist & Mr Byard the tenor. The concert was repeated from yesterday. Trombini was the accompanist. The Gazetta this morning was violently against Byard saying he had sung badly & ruined the piece in the Meistersinger which had sung so I was fearful for him. However Avv: Valsecchi who sat with us said he had persuaded Byard to make a change in the programme & not to sing the Wagner—& the result was excellent. He was much applauded & sang in 3 languages—French, German & Italian to perfection. His voice was not a true tenor but it was very agreeable. I sat near the Guarnieri who were loud in his praise & said he pronounced French better than many French men—& that it [illegible words] que trois critiques should write against him. Css Albrizzi also sitting near us praised his singing very much. Becker’s playing was first rate. His execution marvellous. He is simple & unpretending & took the public immensely. Got home by 11.
