18 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 18th March [1902]. Wrote to congratulate Mr Byard on his last night’s success the poor man, wrote a grateful letter. I had a visit from the man Manaretti who casts my little figures. He brought me home “the noble lady” in bronze & I have also the Madonna & Child reliefs in plaister & to my surprise it looks quite decent. Clara Montalba & her mother came also to see me in the morning. The old lady who is about 86 had not paid a visit all the winter. After lunch I went out in gondola to Hotel Vittoria to see Bss Reinelt who received me most affectionately. I sat an hour chatting with her. She horrified me with details of the goings on amongst the ladies here—& the one I thought the best turns out to be the worst! I went on to the Piazza for an errand to have Irène Ponsonby’s pearls to be strung. I then went to the Edens to ask after Carry who I had heard was not well. I got such a bad account of her at the door that, learning that Mr Eden was at his garden on Giudecca I rowed over to see him & just caught him leaving. He said she had one of her usual attacks of indigestion & was so sick & in such pain that he was not frightened. Dr Van Someren was also puzzled & they will have a consultation tomorrow morning with an Italian Dr. The account is certainly alarming & I am much concerned. Carry is such a good kind old friend. I came home at 5 to tea & set to work & sketched out in clay a sitting figure– This being my evening at home had a few friends come– Clara & Hilda Montalba, Valsecchi, Zethelius, the due Cozzi—brothers, Messrs Le Mallier & Trombini. They left abt midnight.
