5 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. [5th April 1902]. Modelled all morning. Mr & Lady Adela Cochrane & Mr A. Montalba came to lunch. Mr Cochrane is Govr of Caresbrooke Castle & his wife wrote to me from Rome saying they were coming here & that they were friends of my sister Constance. She is lively & both pleasant. They left early & then came Bss Oesterreicher & B. & Bss von der Hoefen– The poor old blind man was more lively today. It is a sad case. I had promised to take Da Laura out in gondola at 2 & I arrived at the Hotel at ½ past, however she forgave me & we went off to the Edens Garden wh Da L. was anxious to see. Met Mme Wiel there still looking delicate– After Da L. had made acquaintance with the Edens & gone round the garden we took our leave & returned to the city left a few cards & then I took Da L. back to the hotel Britannia & went home to tea. Mme Le Mallier came & I had a pleasant talk with her & she told me many interesting things about the present state of the Protestant population of France. I told her it had always struck me that French Protestants were more like the Swiss than the French—wh amused her & she said she thought I was right. Later Iduna Bel. came & sat a while & I lent her some novels to read.
