16 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 16th [April 1902]. We breakfasted at 9.30 & afterwards Elaine was going to sit to me for her portrait on a medal but we had so many interruptions we had to give it up. Sr Desideri came to me in a very disturbed state of mind to say that the leather he had got for me he had found out to have been stolen & what was most curious the thief is in my own house! It appears that a young gondolier who has only been in this house a few days was formerly in the house of the Centanini family where he stole the leather & had since confessed to the lady—who is charitably disposed & not inclined to hand the lad (who is only 19) to the police. I begged Desideri to find out more about it all for me– Signor Trombini, Dini & Cassellari came at 9.30 to try over their trios for Friday evening. At 11 Mr Hamilton came to tell me the result of his attempt to improve the V. & Murano Glass Co. He said at the meeting on Saty they decided not to raise debentures but to borrow money at a bank here—wh he has done & is satisfied that things are doing well & there is nothing else to be done– After lunch I went with Princess Taxis & Ct Seckendorff in gondola to the Eden’s garden. There we met Css Mariette Secheny a great friend of theirs & of Seckendorff who seems a charming woman– The garden is lovely with tulips & iris. We came home by 5. Mr Montalba came & brought a Mr & Mrs Myrick (USA) to be presented to me—nice oldish people—from Philadelphia. They have been here 2 years having come to see after Mrs M’s sister Miss Smith who is ill & cracky. Mr Harrison Clifford also turned up then a Mme von Loe sister to Princess Carolat & wife of the General I had met the other day at Donna Laura’s at Rome & then Iduna came so that it was 7 before I got away to my room to rest a little before dinner. They played bridge in the evening while I played patience.
