20 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 20th [April 1902]. The Villiers & I went to morning service & afterwards walked home. I stopped at the Hotel Vittoria & paid a visit to Bss de Reinelt. She is anxious to get a good place for the launch of the Ferruccio on Wedy & wanted to know where I am going. I told her I did not yet know. Mr G. Arbuthnot lunched with us. He is a Govr of the Bk of England– A very pleasant man. At 3.30 we set out in gondola for the 4 Fontane– Ernest went by the steamer & met us there. We went to the Montalba cabin & had tea with them. We returned by 6.45 & had quickly to dress in order to go to dine at Palazzo Vendramin with the D. & Dss della Grazia. They received us in their state rooms. The first time I had seen them used. Mr & Mrs Moore & Ct Vickenburg dined there also. It was a lovely evening & we returned at 10.30 in an open gondola– The hopes for peace in the Transvaal are great– A joyful prospect. The young Queen of Holland who is ill from typhoid is also said to be out of danger.
