21 May 1902 — Paris | |
Wednesday. 21st [May 1902]. Kate & I walked about & shopped. At 5 we went to see Mme Lacroix 25 Avenue Messine. Found there Mme & Mlle Morphy & heard the latter sing. She is well trained & has a pretty little voice. Vere fetched us in a Rothschild carriage & we went to La Muette to dine with M. de Franqueville. It is a beautiful old château at Passy & used to be a hunting lodge occupied by the Dauphin & Marie Antoinette. At the Revolution of 1789 it was sold & bought by Erard the piano maker & was inherited by Mme de Franqueville. We met there the two daughters Mme de Gournet & Mme d’Ursel also a Mme Arthur de Boislisle & her son & daughter besides others whose names I did not catch. I believe the park wh is 30 acres is very fine is the most interesting part of the property but the rooms are fine & well proportioned & there seemed to be some fine pictures. The daughters of the house, both in an interesting condition seemed dull & not over amiable. Mme Boislisle practised her English on us which was not very fluent—& her daughter only spoke French– The latter is going to stay in London with a married sister who is in the French Embassy. We left about 10.30– The daughters of the house were very smart but dressed in flowing shapeless garments of silk & lace with huge satin bows on the chest to hide their figures—but it seemed to draw attention to it the more. | |
