30 May 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 30th [May 1902]. Slightly better account of Maria. I walked with Kate to Wimborne House in the morning to see Ivor & Cornelia & left Kate there for lunch. Connie lunched with me. After tea I walked down to Victoria St to see Mlle de Perpigna at Hotel Windsor & found her on her sofa. She broke down after the death of the Empress Frederick and is laid up with a weak heart. She was devoted to the Empress, & was Chief Governess to the children. We talked much about H.M.’s last days & she told me how terrible had been her sufferings & how patiently she had borne them. How the last time she was taken out for a drive they spent 2 hours getting her from her bed into the carriage & yet she persisted in going under the impression that it would do her good. Georgie said she much regretted the influence of the English Gov. Miss Green over the Empress & how she had aggravated instead of smoothing down things in former days by repeating & tattling abt the antiEnglish feeling in Germany—& then ending in getting made a sister of St Katherine’s in London with a house & £300 a year—given her by our Queen. Kate, Nellie & I went to dine with Blanche. Edward is away at Harrowgate.
