31 May 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 31st [May 1902]. Kate & I took a walk together in the morning. She left by 3 o’cl train for Peterboro’ where Cecil is now in residence. Blanche fetched me & took me for a drive. Nety Montagu came to see me. She is in waiting on Pss Christian who now lives in Schomberg House in Pall Mall—given her by Q. Victoria. Nellie & I went to see a Morality Play given by the Elizabethan Society at St Georges Hall. It was a most remarkable & impressive performance. Wonderfully acted & must have a good effect on those who see it. It is called “Everyman.” It was splendidly acted. The scenery is simple & such as it might have been in Chaucer’s time when it was first written down, having before that been done from tradition. The Hall was dimly lighted & the stage—only 3 platforms reached by steps from the front lighted by one limelight from the front. The audience was so still that you might have heard a pin drop—& only their sobs were felt. There was no applause & one came out, as if from Church– I was glad to have seen it & shall not forget it.
