1 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 1st June [1902]. I went to Marlboro’ service & afterwards walked across Green Park to see G. Perpigna again– On my way home I met Mr & Mrs Knowles close to their door Queen Anne’s Lodge & they invited me in & showed me their collection of drawings & pictures. Theirs is a charming house—an old fashioned one like a country house tho’ the outside is now dwarfed by the great Q. Ann Mansions wh are next it. Edward came to see me & then Blanche who stayed to lunch with me & left about 3– Gertie Ker Seymer called & also Ernest Villiers who was depressed about Elaine who is laid up at Sopwell with a bad throat & he is bringing her up to town to a nursing home. After tea I went to Cav. Sqre to see Blanche & we went together to Vere St Chapel– It had begun to rain as I started & on our way to church came a deluge—a thunder shower. Mr Page Roberts told us in his sermon that there was almost a certainty that peace had been signed in the Transvaal & said that we should finish the service by singing the Te Deum—wh we did—& then stood while the National Anthem was played. Altho’ one knew that peace was probably so near, still it took me by surprise & it was quite a choky moment. A lady in front of us turned quite white & hid her eyes with her hand on wh was a wedding ring. She probably has a husband out at the war! Blanche has her boy there & her relief is great. I had to hurry home from church & went to dine at Wimborne House where I only met Corise & Francie & came home at 10.30 very tired.
