18 June 1902 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Wednesday. 18th [June 1902]. There was a sale going on in one of the houses of the Precincts where had lived a Mrs Gates. The only excitement was over a chippendale card table with carvings. It went for £22 to a dealer & at the “knock out” or 2nd sale among the dealers for £50 & will probably be resold for £100! Such is the present mania for furniture of that period. I left Peterboro’ by 3.6 train for London & arrived at home just at 5. As I got to my door Lord & Lady Bessborough came to call & were very pleasant & chatty & wonderfully active & young looking for people over 80– Blanche looked in to ask me to dine with her—but I was tired & preferred to stay quietly at home–
