21 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 21st [June 1902]. I went out shopping in the morning & bought flowers of the old flower women at the top of Regent Street– Also fruit for lunch. Mr & Mrs Griscom, Pansie & Mrs Rodman G. came to lunch but did not remain long after as the ladies were going to a garden party at Osterley. I took a walk to Russell Square to call on Mme Nevada Palmer but could not find her– As I came back through Frith Street it was curious to hear Italian talked all round me– It is quite an Italian quarter. I got in at 5. Nellie had gone out with Mr Griscom. Capt. A. Glyn called & so did Elaine who is quite recovered from her indisposition. Mr Charles Alderson called to explain how we are to get to Gwydyr House on Thursday to see the Coronation Procession. It is rather an anxiety as one gets nearer the lines. The streets are full of people at work & barriers are being put up on the side streets along the route of the Procession to prevent a sudden rush & any accidents. Preparations for illuminations are very general even in remoter parts of the town. There is still some anxiety as to the King’s health & various & ingenious alarming reports—many also declare that he is very unpopular on acct of his devotion to Mrs G. Keppel & it is said there are murmurs against “Alice” as he drives about. In this there is probably no truth at all. I went to dine at 17 Cav. Sqr. Lord & Lady Bessborough, Mr Burton, the Oranmores, & Mr Vivian (Ld Swansea’s son) & Wolff the violinist were dining– We had some pleasant music in the evening– Wolff accompanied the girls singing & Irène’s violin—& played some Bach on violin without accompaniment. I was tired & depressed & glad to come home at 11–
