22 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 22nd [June 1902]. When Nellie & I went off to service at Marlboro’ Chapel the streets were already very unlike the usual Sunday quiet and by the time we returned they were thronged. Thousands of people walking about to see the decorations of the streets—vans, cabs, carriages overladen with sight seers. The Italian Co which is decorating Piccadilly were hard at work erecting an arch in Piccadilly the workmen talking Italian & even their ladders having the address of their firm at Florence—which proves that they brought over the whole thing with them. There is some dissatisfaction at the job being given to Italians but their tender was £1500 cheaper than any other so it had to be taken. They work quicker & for less wages than the English men who are therefore being gradually driven out of the market by the foreign workman. Nellie took various photographs of the streets & then we returned home. Connie & her girl Bee came to luncheon as also Augustus Alderson. Mr Walrond, Mrs Griscom & Pablo Casals came to tea– Nellie & I dined with the Griscom party at the Grand Hotel. Mr G. was absent & only returned after dinner. The crowds in the streets continued till quite late– Mr C. Arbuthnot came to see me & stayed a long time this afternoon– He is a Director of the Bk of England & I made his acquaintance this spring at Venice.
