29 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 29th [June 1902]. Eda got up early & started off at 8.15 for the City to attend the Intercessory service at St Paul’s Cathedral at 10.30. She did not return till nearly 1—but after waiting for an hour before the doors opened got good places & had an hour more to wait. Nellie & I went to the Marlboro’ Hse Chapel Royal to a 10 oclock Intercessory service which was attended by the Queen & the P. & Pss of Wales, Princess Christian, the D. of Cambridge & several others of the R. family. The Litany was chanted—the Bp. of Winchester gave an address wh did not seem to me very interesting & we finished by singing on our knees a verse of “God save the King.” The choir sang il Pianissimo & it was very touching. As we came away the Queen drove past us & gave me a bow in answer to my curtsey—she was looking very pale & sweet & sad—& has been almost constantly at the King’s bedside– The accounts continue to be good. Nellie & I walked as far as Buckingham Palace & then back home. Mary Alderson came to lunch– We sat & talked till 5. Evely Eliot came to tea also Sir Julian Salamans the old Australian Judge quite a character—& very amusing. After 6 started for a walk with the 3 Alderson girls when we met Blanche & her girl Gweneth & I turned back & walked with the 2 latter to Buckingham Palace to write our names on the King but the gates were closed. B & Gweneth got into a cab to go home & I returned on foot. Louis DC. dined with us.
