5 July 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 5th July [1902]. Eda left me & returned to Peterborough. Today is the anniversary of my great loss. I went off to the morning service at the Chapel Royal. I was the only member of the Congregation. It was rather absurd being the only one to say responses to the Sub Dean! Afterwards he spoke to me & I asked him whether he wd like me to present to the Chapel a lace altar frontal with a representation of the Annunciation which my mother had left to me. There were two & I gave one to the Cathedral at Peterboro’. He said he would be delighted to have it & I promised it to him. I felt it was a fitting memorial to my husband, though I did not say so, & a thank offering on the King’s recovery wh now seems certain. I got home by 11 & sat quiet till lunch—when I had a message thro’ the telephone asking me to go & see Constance who had some invitations printed for me for an Art Sale I am going to have on 15th & 16th in aid of the new International Seaman’s Hospital. I went down by 4. She was out but Bee Eliot sat with me till her mother returned & I had a little talk with her & returned home to 5 o’cl tea. There was a formal declaration in the evening bulletins that the King is out of danger. After dinner Nellie & I walked to St James’ Park through the Horseguards to look at the Canadian Arch near Whitehall wh was illuminated & was very handsome. It was lighted most evenings this week & attracted crowds. The night was hot & people were glad to be out in the streets. We did not go beyond the Horseguards on acct of the crowd but walked by Birdcage walk across St James’ Park bridge & home thro’ St James Square.
