17 July 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 17th July [1902]. Dined with the two old Miss Monks & sat next to Mr Victor Williamson who told me much about the preparations for the Coronation he being one of the officials who has much to do in managing it. He said that much has to be done by signals & that when the rehearsal was going on the whole thing went wrong by someone having put his handkerchief to his face to blow his nose. This was mistaken for the waving of the little white flag & the signal for firing the Tower guns was given at the wrong time. He also laments that much of the beautiful music will have to be suppressed—also he described to me the scene at the Abbey when during the Rehearsal for the 26th June the news came to them of the King’s illness– How, having been walking in the cloisters he came into the Abbey to find the Bishop of London with the letter containing the news in his hand & how they all at once knelt down & prayed for the King’s recovery. Mr Heathcote Long sat on the other side of me & we joined in lamentations over the fallen Campanile.
