21 July 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 21st July [1902]. I went to luncheon with Mr Hamilton Gatliff at 11 Eaton Square & there met the Gd Dss of Mecklenburg & her brother the Duke of Cambridge. He is now so infirm that he has to be helped by his ADC to move & did not come upstairs to the drawing room at all. I sat between Col. Williams the Duke’s ADC & Canon Wilberforce at table—there were other smart ladies there Lady Ormond &c & Mrs Wilberforce & Mrs FitzGeorge, a very fat vulgar Levantine—but good natured withal who has married the D. of Cambridge’s son by his morganatic marriage. The entertainment given us by Mr H. Gatliff who is a youngish bachelor was very splendid—every delicacy to eat—flowers, silver &c. His house full of objects of art mingled with horrid modern vulgar things. He had P. Adolph of Mecklenburg staying with him a very fair lad. I met also Sir E. Mallet & Lady Ermerntrude– I had not met Sir E. since Constantinople days when he was first secy to the Embassy. Since then he had made a wonderful career, has married a Duke’s daughter, very rich, & has been Ambassador. No one should have forseen it—& I remember that Henry used to wish he had a useful clever 1st secy to help him when he was so overworked! Such is life!
