23 July 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 23rd [July 1902]. Mrs Fortescue came to see me in the morning & we settled that she should come & pay me a visit at Venice on 2nd Oct. Afternoon Nellie & I went to a small musical party at Lady Humphrey’s to hear Santley sing. He has still a wonderful voice & his vigour & go is tremendous tho’ one saw it was a great strain on him. Afterwards a girl sang a pupil of his whose voice was not pleasant Miss               – The old Duchess of Somerset was there a tall hale old lady over 80. After the music while we were partaking of tea in another room she sat down at the piano & played to us by heart really not badly. Dined at 7.30 & then went to the Euston Station to meet Blanche & left at 10 P.M. for Ireland.
