25 December 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 25th December [1902]. Christmas Day. Nela & I went to morning service at 10.30. Marchesa Cassis sat in our pew & we walked back with her to her house. In the evening I had a party of 17 to dinner viz. Mr & Mrs Hulton, Iduna Belmondo, Mme Rubini, Mrs & Dr van Someren, M. & Mme Wiel, Mr & Mrs Prinsep & their sons Anthony & Thoby, Mr Woods, Clara & Hilda Montalba, Nela & self. Mr Eden being unwell he & Carry did not join our party. We were very cheerful & eat the usual English dinner roast beef & plum pudding &c. In the evening the rest of the English colony joined us & Mr Woods arranged some charming living portraits for wh he has a special talent. One of the best was Trombini the Pianist as “The Sailor” after Moroni. The children of the party all did a portrait to their great delight. Abt 12 we had refreshments & then the party broke up.
