30 December 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 30th [December 1902]. Mrs Prinsep took a party to picnic on the Lido. I declined to go but sent Nela in my gondola– It was a dull day & abt 3 o’cl began to rain. After lunch I walked out to the Carmine opposite to wh the Bompards are staying & paid Mme Bompard a visit. She fell in the street a fortnight ago and broke her arm and is passing a painful & solitary life & was pleased to see me– From her I walked by the Iron bridge to San Maurizio to pay a visit to a Miss Smith—an American lady sister to Mrs Merrick. Miss Smith has been ill & rather mad for 2 years now– Her chief delight is to dress dolls of wh she had over 400 round her room! She was in bed with her face almost hidden—but talked loud & fast & said some rather amusing things—but on the whole she was very childish. Mrs Merrick hearing I had to go on to the Institute sent me in her own gondola. There I met Mr Hulton & Mr Harston & we went round the Institute arranging what rooms the new caretaker would have & what new furniture required to be bought. Baroness Reinelt & Sr Malagola dined with us & in the evening I had my usual reception– The wind got up suddenly & very few ladies came to me—mostly gentlemen. Bss Reinelt left early being very nervous about getting back to her apartment at Hotel Victoria in the high wind.
