31 December 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 31st [December 1902]. Mr & Mrs Merrick came to 5 o’cl tea & then Mrs van Someren & then Elsie Cassis and the Prefect. I told them that I had seen the rooms offered by Dr van S. to the Sailor’s Hospital—& agreed with the Drs that they were not adapted to that use & that I should not be sorry that they were veto’d at wh the Prefect said he should settle the matter & forbid them. He thought we should better to find a house in a more distant part of the town where there was more air &c &c. Nela & I dined at 8 & went off to the Sailor’s institute wh there were New Year rejoicings going on– Mrs Prinsep & her 3 boys were there & Mr Williamson– A concert was in progress & was kept up till 10 when tea was served– The men were about 60. Tea—cakes, jam & ham sandwiches & hard boiled eggs were the menu. Mr Prinsep & Mr Woods came later & brought & distributed cigars & Mr P. gave a humorous lecture with funny illustrations on a black board. All went off very well & I stayed till past 12 to wish the men a happy New Year & then walked home with Mr Harston.
