17 January 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 17th [January 1903]. I drove out with Nellie in the morning to shop. Monty came up to my drawing room to see me as he heard I have not been well. He is kinder & more affect than he used to be. He is gone today to stay with the King at Sandringham. Nellie went off to Brington to stay with her Aunt Molly & C. Wyld with her. Sophy Palmer arrived to stay with me about 5. I gave her my bedroom that she might have her maid in the dressing room & I went up to live in Nellie’s room– We dined alone & had a quiet talk & So. told me all about her engagement to Ct de Franqueville. The only difficulty is that So. is determined to be married in our own Church & the R.C.s are making an attempt to prevent it. So. declares she will not be married any other way—so if the R.C.’s stand out the match may even yet be broken off—
