19 January 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 19th [January 1903]. We breakfasted in our own rooms. At 12 I went out to see Mr J. Murray & to ask what is being done abt the publishing of Henry’s memoirs. Found that the book will be out in a few days– J. Murray & Duncannon have softened down the account of Lord Stratford de Radcliff wh might have given pain to his daughter who is still living—& wh had worried me—so that I appeal to D’s judgment. After lunch Lord Stanmore came to see Sophy & I went out to the R. Academy to see the winter Exhibition of old Masters. There are there 2 of Ivor’s pictures—a Cardinal by Guido Reni & a Tintoretto—a large collection is also there of Cuyps & also of Corbet’s—and other fine things. At 4 o’cl I went to the lecture room to hear Val Prinsep’s lecture to the students, principally on Leighton & Ruskin—met there Mr Woods & Fildes. Mr Prinsep, Woods & Anthony came back to tea with me at Savile Row. Later Sir Edward Poynter came & sat after the others left—chatting. Duncannon came to dinner with Sophy & me. Nellie still away at Brington. At the R. Academy there is a most interesting room full of drawings & models of the excavations of Knossos—of the remains of the labyrinth. I must return there to study them.
