14 March 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 14th [March 1903]. I went off to the Waterloo Station at 10.30 with Eda Alderson who saw me off by the 11 P.M. train to Templecombe. I took leave of her as her visit to me is at an end and she returns this afternoon to Lutterworth. I reached T. at 1.30 & was met by Merthyr’s carriage & got to Inwood just at 2. Merthyr had just come in from hunting, Aura was still out hunting & Theo was in her own room laid up with a very bad cold. So Merthyr & I lunched together & I was hungry having breakfasted at 8. Then we sat talking a long time in the morning room over family & other matters having a hundred things to say—not having met since last August. We had a turn in the garden to see the few daffodils that were out & then had tea in the upstairs sitting room where he found Theo looking & feeling very unwell & coughing dreadfully. We dined at 7.30 the parson Mr Daivell & Mr Harris a squire nearby dined. The latter a pleasant good looking manly creature in pinks (as Merthyr was) is Harris the great bacon merchant with £20,000 a year. He is in the Imperial Yeomanry & by some drawing out told us many interesting things abt the late war. He has a liking for the Boer & spoke well of their conduct on the whole & especially of Dewet & Botha. He believes that the Boers will soon amalgamate with us & do well.
