17 March 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 17th [March 1903]. Getting no answer to my note to Lord Brassey I began to turn about what other house I might try to get & I bethought me of Lady Sligo who has a ball room– Nela came to lunch & so before that meal we got into a cab & rushed off to 32 Eaton Square and were received by the twin Ladies Brown. Their mother was not out of her room so I sent up my request by the girls & got a favorable answer wh relieves me of much anxiety. Connie telephoned to ask for my carriage so I sent it to her in the afternoon & went out on foot with Nela but we were soon driven home by the rain. Sir E. Poynter called to talk over 2 small pictures wh Frizzoni offers me for sale– One by Procaceno the other by               . Sir E. thinks by the photos that I had best buy them so I settled to do so. Duncannon paid me a long visit & we talked over the arrangements for their visit to Venice. Mrs Beam called—she seems a very intelligent woman & is very pleasant. I had a dinner party of 12 consisting of Ct & Css Contadone (son of Marchesa Villamarina—Queen Margherita’s factotum). She is English & very handsome but spoils herself with too much art. Lady Sligo, Mr & Mrs Fuller Maitland, Mr Henry James the novelist USA—Mr Somerset Beaumont, Sir Wm Richmond RA & Onie & Lord Oranmore—a pleasant evening.
