18 March 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 18th March [1903]. Spent whole morning writing letters & invitations to the sale. Went to Monty to ask him a question & he told me he thought he will have to leave this house after all– He has hired rooms in the Albany & cannot underlet them. I told him to please himself– I dont believe he really will go in the end—but I do not oppose him. He was nice & friendly & pleasant in manner. Nela came to lunch– I tried on my dress for Court & washed my hair to get it properly white which it rarely is in London. I drove out at 3 & went to the Sale of Irish Industries at Londonderry House in Park Lane in order to see Blanche at her stall & buy of her. It was a great crowd, nearly all ladies—& very hot– I went on to Sir E. Poynter’s studio where his pictures for this year’s Academy were on view. I do not admire his painting wh is hard & metallic. He has an interesting picture of the top of the poor old Campanile. I met there the Dss of Somerset who was very civil & promised me a drawing of hers for the Sale & took an interest in my coming Concert. Home to 5 o’cl tea. Visit from Connie & Dorothy Fortescue—then from Mr Bennett who came to make final arrangements about the concert & said I had better try to get Lady Maud Warrender to sing at it. I found she was a friend of the Rates so I rushed off to see them & to ask them—but found they did not know her—so came home—dressed & went to dine with the John Murrays in Albemarle St. Sir Theodore Martin took me to dinner & was very delightful. He was an intimate friend of dear Sir Fred. Burton & we were happy to talk together of him & he offered to give me a drawing by him. Mr Matheson sat on t’other side of me– Lord & Miss Goschen were there & Sir A. & Miss Birch. Home early.
