1 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st July [1903]. Sixty today! I can hardly believe it & yet the time drags slowly by for the last 9 years– This was a Sunday that year 1894 & on this day Henry seeming to feel his end was so near gave me instructions & told me where to find his will– He remembered that it was my birthday & we were both moved. Ah me! I painted in the morning & at 4 o’cl had Mrs Iddings & her little girl to tea—also Mrs Harston & her Harold—& Bss Reinelt and also Ersilia Canevaro who brought a Russian lady Marchesa Sacripante to introduce to me– When they were gone I went out in gondola with Bss Reinelt to the Exhibition gardens where we again met Ersilia & her sister Maria—& then were joined by Css Morosini Rombo who brought Mr Gordon Bennett to us with 2 friends of his—one I recognised to be Mr Pollock an American friend of my brother Arthur’s—& a very pleasant man– Bss left me at my house at 7 & I took leave of her as she is leaving Venice tomorrow. Having heard nothing of Mr Sandalgian I sent him a note to say I hope he is not ill. He was there, but sent no answer. Clara Montalba came to dinner & we threaded bead necklaces till 10 when I took her out in gondola & left her at her own home & then came home & went to bed.
