3 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd [July 1903]. It was a very hot day & I did not do much work of any sort. Mr Pollock sent me 200 lire collected for the hospital from the Lysistrata Mr Gordon Bennett’s yacht. Bentivoglio & his little girl came to see me at 4 o’cl & sat talking till we were joined by Css Cara                a S. American lady who is here taking the baths who lives mostly at Siena and has been much in the U.S. She speaks English very easily & is very intelligent. I did not get out of doors till past 6 & then in the cool had a pleasant row—left some cards & went to call on Dr & Mrs Robertson—the Scotch Minister & his wife. He is a good old man, she a very capable woman– They bought property close to the Church of the Salute & have made a small but charming house. I told them about the hospital I am arranging & they at once gave me 50 fcs so that with the sale of beads & subscriptions I have got 400 fcs for the hospital within these last 3 days– After my dinner I went to fetch Clara Montalba & took her for a turn in the gondola by moonlight—a beautiful evening with a slight breeze.
