31 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 31st July [1903]. Mr Merrick (US) who is staying at Hotel Europe brought his daughter Mrs Gardener & her niece & I showed them all the pictures in the house &c. At 4 o’cl I went out in gondola to call on Ersilia Canevaro who leaves Venice tomorrow– There were several other people calling so I did not remain long– Ersilia sang accompanied by young Baron Franchetti who also played Chopin to us magnificently. He is an uncanny looking pale faced thin man—& one can rather imagine that he is not easy to live with & that his wife Marion had some excuse for leaving him. I went on to call on Miss Smith, Mrs Merrick’s sister who is bedridden & rather cracky– She is a rich American & has some kind of nervous desease. Her sister Mrs Merrick is devoted to her & has left her own country & family & has come to tend her. I went home to tea & then out again for a walk with Aspasie Kwekwitsch who looked in to see me. I left her at the Academy & went on to the Montalbas– Clara & Ellen accompanied me back as far as my door & I dined & afterwards Sister Clara came & we did accounts together– There was a serenata which we saw from my window. Mrs Gardener & her niece also came in for a few minutes to see it pass. It had hardly gone by when a thunderstorm came up & I sent off Sister Clara home in a hurry in my gondola & the Serenade was at an end.
