27 August 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 27th [August 1903]. I went off by the 10.30 train from Victoria Station to Dorking to pay the Rates a visit. Their carriage met me at the station. It was fine but very windy & had rained in the early morning. There has scarcely been a whole fine day since I have been in England. Found Mr Rate fairly well bur feeble. Mrs Rate pretty well but very anxious & worried about him. He is now over 84 & has had a stroke & is an invalid tho’ he moves about alone & sits at meals with his family. The daughter Enid Erskine is staying with them looking very pretty. The other daughter Ida Hoare who is living near came over to lunch with 2 children & a Mrs Lindsay Smith a great friend. After lunch I sat with Mr Rate while he smoked & he was chatty & interested– Went out into the garden with Mrs Rate & saw her marvellously beautiful flowers & herbaceous borders. She drove with me to the station & I left at 6.10 & got home for dinner here with Nellie. It was fine all day but in eveng rain returned with redoubled force. Found a telegram from Blanche saying she had reached Bessboro safely & without toothache.
