31 August 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 31st [August 1903]. Nela Du Cane was staying a few days with Verona Brooke & they came up to town to see me. I at once carried Nela off to Pss Victoria who was delighted to see her old chum & carried her off shopping & then kept her to luncheon. Nellie went off to Hatfield abt 1 o’cl to attend her uncle Lord Salisbury’s funeral. Verona & I lunched together. When Nela returned after lunch radiant because Princess Victoria has invited her to go to stay with her at Bonn & as they are to start tomorrow eveng Nela hesitates lest there should not be time to get her clothes from the country & to make her arrangements. I advised her to telegraph to her sister for her box—& go back with Verona to Shere for tonight & return here tomorrow morng. At 3.30 Lady Burdett Coutts who came to lunch with Verona & me took me out for a drive in her carriage to Battersea Park wh owing to the constant rain of this summer is beautifully green now. It is a lovely park wh I remember, when a girl to have seen as a wild dirty space covered with brickbats & tins. When my mother lived (for 7 years) at Exeter House Roehampton we used to drive up to town almost daily & often thro’ Battersea was our route. The trees are now growing big & the borders of herbaceous plants are quite beautiful. I said to the Baroness, how curious to think that this time tomorrow I shall be far away in France on my journey to Italy. She deposited me at my home at 5 & there I found Pss Victoria with Css Blücher) come to bid me good bye. I thanked her for taking Nela with her & took an affectionate leave of her after giving her tea. Nellie returned very sad from her uncle’s funeral at Hatfield. It has been a quite but impressive ceremony—only members of the family present besides the dependents & servants. We dined alone Nellie & I—did accounts together & did my last packings & I went to bed tired.
