30 September 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 30th [September 1903]. Pss Christian went out with Malagola for the last time in the morning. I took Pss Charlotte walking. We lunched at ¼ to 1 & then Pss Charlotte, Connie & I went off together to the station to receive Pss Christian & Pss Victoria there & to see them off by the 2 o’cl train for Milan. The Prefect & Belmondos & one or two others were there & the Princesses expressed to all their regret at leaving & how happy they had been during their stay here. Really I feel that we have done all we can for them & that they will have a long time to wait before they have such a quiet restful 3 weeks again. They are very amiable & easy to please & I am satisfied that all went off well– Coming out of the station Iduna Belmondo walked with Pss Charlotte & me & told the Pss that she had invited some people to meet her at tea. Pss C. did not like this & said she wd rather not– (It is in fact against etiquette to invite anyone to meet royalty without their consent). However as the Sindaco could not be put off without giving him dire offense she assented to his being there. But there was a quiet over the little party when we went there– The Sindaco looked sheepish at me knowing I am much offended at his conduct about the opening of our hospital. He not only did not come to it but put a nasty notice abt it in the papers & what was worse thus was markedly impolite to my Princesses having excused himself from an invitation to lunch without a proper excuse– These Venetians are very small minded & have no usage du monde! Now that Pss Christian is gone Pss Charlotte is much more cheerful—& less genée. But still looks terribly sad. It makes my heart bleed for her– We had her gentleman Herr v. Rida & her lady Fraulein Rochau to dinner this evening.
