8 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 8th [October 1903]. Had a hospital Committee at 9 o’cl . The question of its name was to be decided. I had taken the name “International.” This the rest objected to & Messrs Brown & Van Someren said they had promised Dr Kepler the German not to take it & would therefore propose “British & Foreign.” I saw it was of no use insisting so gave way & said I would refer it to Pss Christian. This over I went down to receive Signor Modigliani, curator of the Borghese gallery at Rome—& his ½ English wife. Showed them round the pictures as also to Canon St John who came abt tea same time. I went to lunch with the Curtis & to my horror found I was not expected till tomorrow. However they begged me to remain & I did so & met Lady Helen Vincent & her sister Lady Cynthia Graham & Mr Sargent the painter. I went over to tea at the hospital having invited Berovich Pasha & his wife to see it & Mr Merrick & Mr Harston were there. We had tea in the garden. Afterwards I took Mr Harston for a row in gondola.
