9 January 1904 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. [9th January 1904]. to Inwood with Monty my bro: to pay a visit to Merthyr. We found him very unwell—suffering from lumbago & other discomforts which Theo wd not explain to us. We got down from town abt 6 & as usual were ushered into the morning room wh was empty but where tea was prepared– After some little time Theo came down & welcomed us coldly—& then said she supposed we wanted to see Merthyr but we were only to remain 10 minutes with him. This alarmed us greatly. He was seated by the fire in the room upstairs looking pale & very bent—& used a stick to walk with. He is wretchedly thin. We stayed ten minutes & were then turned out by Theo & I took Monty to the smoking room & sat there till dinner. Merthyr came down to dinner but talked little. Miss Acland the ex governess was staying in the house. Aura was also at home. Both she & Theo were very snappy & taciturn at dinner & Monty & I had to keep up the ball. I played patience after dinner & we were all ordered to bed at 10. I sat with Monty in the smoking room for an hour & we talked over the inexplicable state of things at Inwood—whether Merthyr is really ill & what is the matter with him.
