8 April 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 8th [April 1904]. The Prince takes his early coffee in his own room. Prince Charlotte breakfasts with all of us in the dining room at 9. At 10 Sr Malagola came & took the Prince out sight seeing & Princess Charlotte went out with her lady & gentleman Herr Roeder who are lodged at the Hotel Britannia as I could not put them up in this house. The Prince & Princess & her 2 maids & her manservant make a large party—& this house is not so very large. I have besides Mrs Burdon Muller & maid & her little boy Rowland—& Eda Alderson. Next week when the Duke & Dss & maid of Somerset & Capt. Beaumont come we shall be crammed. As soon as the Princess was gone out Eda & I set out on foot & I went to the Edens where I was to have talked business with Mr Eden. The question to be discussed is the buying of the property leased to us for the Cosmopolitan hospital which I want to buy & give to the Hospital in memory of Henry. The property belongs to Miss Holland & she has leased it to us for 5 years at £25 per an: & with the promise to sell it to us for £600 within 5 years. She now wants to make a condition that if we ever sell it we should do so at the same sum. This seems to be not to be thought of for the property will probably improve & the charity ought to profit thereby. I found that Mr Eden was at the garden & so I left the message with Carry as to what I thought & then I went to join Eda in the Piazza & came home. The P. & Pss both returned to luncheon—& after lunch they smoked in the Belvedere– At 2.30 I went off to see Lady Radnor to ask her whether she had made any progress abt the concert she is getting up on 18th in aid of the Cos: Hos: in the Pal. Rezzonico & then returned & at 3.30 set out with the Princess for the Montalbas. Pss Charlotte wanted to see Clara’s paintings– The Prince remained at home as it appears that he generally sleeps after lunch. After the Montalbas we went for a row round by the station down the Grand Canal to see if we could spy an apartment to let (one knows by white papers stuck in the windows) as the Princess is very anxious to find a pied a terre here. We came in to tea & had Baroness Reinelt & Ct & Css Belmondo to see Her Royal Highness & she received them at tea–
