20 April 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 20th [April 1904]. I accompanied the P. & Pss to S. Rocco’s in the morning & Prof: Malagola did cicerone to them. We also went to the church of S. Maria Formosa– Directly after lunch the P. & Pss went to the station to leave for Vienna. The Somersets, Mrs B. Muller, Capt. Beaumont & Eda Alderson went on to the station & I brought the P. & Pss in my gondola later as they wished to avoid a long stay at the station. However the train was 20 minutes late from Rome so they had to wait ¾ hour. The Sindaco, Prefect & Elsie Cassis, Della Grazias, Malagolas &c were there to see her off & really it was rather a tedious wait which was trying to Princess Charlotte as she felt very much leaving here. I am afraid her life is a lonely one. She has few intimate friends, feels the loss of her mother & is not in good health—& it is touching how she clings to me– She is gentle & clever & generous. She is always giving me little presents & thinking what she can buy for others & all she does is done with good taste & royally. My heart aches for her sometimes—these royal Princesses have so few persons to care for them for their own sakes. At last the train carried her & the Prince away & we all dispersed from the station. I took the Duke of Somerset over to see the Sailor’s Institute with wh he was very pleased. I then called on Lady Hamilton who is staying in Venice & suffering very much from asthma. She has been a very pretty woman but now her sister Miss Muir, is far prettier & is very gentle looking & distinguished. In the evening there was a concert of the Benedetto Marcello Soy which took place in the Fenice—it was a repetition of the concert the Princess was asked to go to yesterday. All my party went to it except the Dss of Somerset & I– I was tired & glad to be quiet.
