6 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Monday. 6th June [1904]. Had a quiet morning typing, modelling & painting at a watercolor copy of the Carpaccio I copied years ago at the Academy here—St Louis & Ste Barbara & the visit of Elizabeth– Mrs Williamson came to see me at 4. Her son Mr C. Williamson (the expriest) has just had a violent attack of typhus at Rome & his recovery has been a marvel. His pretty old mother was with him till now when she is about to return to his father in England. Since the son changed his religion the father has been very hard & the mother has hard work to keep peace. She was a daughter of Lord Tredegar & she & her 5 sisters were all pretty. They were contemporary with my elder sisters—but I remember them well. At 5 I went out to the Grand Hotel to take out Bss Reinelt for a row. We went to the Public Gardens & sat there a long while & she told me all her woes which proceed from the riches she had left her by her second husband. Her 4 children by the 1st husband have all turned against her & the attempt to blackmail her has been traced to her son which she feels as a disgrace. She now fears she has got a heart complaint & is so depressed that she says she will probably finish her days in a convent so as to be at peace—a notion I combat—as I say we have no right to get rid of our responsibilities. I left her at her hotel abt 7 & went home. After dinner I went out in gondola—a beautiful fresh night. I called to see if Mr Harston wd like to accompany me for a giro– Mr Harston came & we talked “parish” & never reverted to the question of his leaving—so much so that I can hardly believe he really means to go.
