20 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 20th [June 1904]. Mr Montalba took me to the Cassa di Risparmio to open the account for the hospital of wh I am now treasurer. I gave him a power of attorney as he is to manage the banking part for me– He is an adept at those things & I am very ignorant of it. We were there some time signing & counter signing & I got home at 11.30. Lovely day hot—but delicious air. At 4 oclock I set off in gondola & rowed to the Quattro Fontane to take tea with the Montalbas in their hut. I there met the P. & Pss Clary & their daughter. Took a walk with the latter by the sea shore. There is little nice walking now on the Lido the huts extend all along the shore from the St Elizabetta to the Fontane—the lovely Lido of former days—quiet & solitary the Lido where Byron gallopped on the sands is gone & is daily becoming more vulgar & inhabited. Such is progress which destroys the picturesque & quiet joys– I met there also at tea D. & Dss Canevaro & her sister Maria & Baroness Reinelt. The latter party was going to dine at the Stabto du Bagni & invited me– I was glad of the excuse that I was rowing Clara Montalba home & we had a pleasant hour together. Going to the Lido I read Herbert Spencer’s life which interests me immensely. He dissects his own character in such a queer way & yet without ostentation. I went out after dinner again for a row.
