26 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 26th [June 1904]. Countess Persico’s young son who died of consumption was buried at 9 this morn. I sent the gondola to the funeral so the Dss & I walked to our church. A very hot day but very windy. Iduna sent the Dss home in her gondola & she & I walked. I went to the Hotel Victoria to see Bss Reinelt. Found her in a state because I had been asked to go to tea with the ArchDuchesse Isabelle on the Lido & she was not invited. Css Morosini was also invited to make things worse. However she calmed down. After lunch we had a visit from Prof: Malagola [who] is off tomorrow on an excursion to Bologna. At 3.30 we started off, the Dss and I in gondola for the Lido. The wind was rough & we took nearly an hour to get to St Elizabetta. Walked up the avenue to the Villa Elena– There we were told by the servants that H.R.H. was in the “cabanne” on the shore & they conducted us there. We found TT.RR.HH. with their daughters (3) & little boy. I had meant to ask the lady in waiting if I might bring in the Dss but as the ArchDuchess came forward at once I had no help for it but to ask her straight out saying that the Dss had been presented to the ArchDuke when he was in England last week. She at once begged me to bring her in so I went outside the cabin & called her. The Countess Morosini & her daughter were also there and Signor Minotti an Italian who now lives at Potsdam a newspaper correspondent I think. Iced coffee was served & fruits. The 3 Princesses were presented to us. I sat talking to the A. Dss– The Morosini with the A. Duke & the Dss of Abercorn with a Princess. There were pretty little white waves on the sea & the colours were lovely. The little royal boy was sprawling about in the sand with a little companion—who was chiefly employed in teaching him to stand on his head. Presently Ct Girolamo Marcello arrived & the A. Dss had a long confab with him about the lace industry wh she is trying to establish in Austria. After 2 she moved over to sit with the Dss of Abercorn. At last at about 6 H.R.H. rose & we were allowed to depart. We did not see the Morosini party again as they drove to the steamer for Venice. We were joined by Ct Marcello & we took him back to Venice in my gondola—& arrived home at 7. After dinner the Dss took a row with Mme Malagola. I was tired & went early to bed.
