28 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 28th [June 1904]. Started out for a walk with the Dss of Abercorn abt 9.30 & took her to the Piazza to do a little shopping & back by 11. Found Cav. Arbib who had much to say to me about Venezia-Murano affairs & think himself very badly treated by the London Committee who having nearly come to an arrangement with him are apparently now going to throw him over & give the whole affair over to Jesurum & Co. I could say nothing to him as I fear it is true & it may be right as I don’t understand business—but the idea depresses me vastly– I am sorry to see Henry’s work come to an end—but it is inevitable I fear. The Duchess wanted to see Clara Montalba’s studio so we went there & luckily found her at home & she showed the Dss what she has there nearly finished. As we had not had tea we went to the Cosmopolitan Hospital & begged Sister Catherine to give us tea in the garden—& then I showed her round the hospital where at present there is but one patient & then we went to see the Edens in their garden & sat some time there enjoying the cool. In the evening a very few people came to my reception. There was an amateur serenade to take place—in wh the Contessina Mocenigo sang. We rather expected they would come under my windows but after waiting till 11.30 we gave up expecting them and went to bed. It was a lovely night & the moon at its full.
