8 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 8th [July 1904]. When we looked out this morning all the “pati” on the Grand Canal were placarded & had these words “Gondolieri privato. Ademanza Sabato sera Ridotto.” It appears the socialists want to make the gondoliers in private houses strike for 3 lire a day good & bad—young & old– It is a bad lookout when such a tyranny begins. Polly Clary came to see me & to say she is going away with her parents on Saturday—tomorrow– After tea I went off to the Eden’s garden to bid them goodbye as they leave for Belluno where they have a villa, tomorrow. After dinner I called for Mrs Curtis & took her for a float. We came up the Genl taking Carry Eden floating also. Home to bed about 11–
