9 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 9th [July 1904]. I set to work to resume my typing—& worked at Henry’s journal in 1837 when he travelled in the East also wrote letters &c. Profr Malagola brought a friend to see the pictures in this house & I received & showed them round. Tea at 4 & at 5 went to the Eden’s garden thinking to meet the Genl there—but did not find him so I went to his house Ca Semitecolo & the stupid gondoliers woke up the poor old man out of his sleep & received me. Css Belmondo came in also & I went home as it was too hot to care to be out till after sunset. I fetched the Genl after dinner & we took a float together– He told me that he was very fond of Latin & now that he is blind & cannot occupy himself he repeats the Odes of Horace wh he knows by heart & that he puts English rhymes into Latin or Italian as an amusement. He is a very refined old man and it is curious to think that it should be the last occupation of an old soldier & smart man about town. He is wonderfully cheerful & bright considering he has lost an arm (from desease) & is nearly totally blind.
