14 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 14th [July 1904]. I had hardly sat down to write when old Mr Curtis called to see whether I would go out with him in gondola to the Island of Fisola which is at the end of the Giudecca just beyond Stucky’s mill for flour. The island is owned by a Mr Walther who has a nice little chalet on it—& there is farm house where the contadine keeps cows. He also cultivates it as an “orto.” There are charming shady walks under pergolas now hanging with grapes which are very plentiful this year—great beds of artichokes, of roses, of carnations &c. The morning was fresh, but the sun very hot. We rowed in the Giudecca canal & I got home for 1.30 lunch. Began my copy of the 2nd Cima in my collection & worked till tea time. Went out in gondola to the hospital & on the way back seeing the Montalbas in their gondola I stopped & took Clara with me. We landed at the Piazza & walked home & Clara dined with me. In the evening I took her for a “float” before I dropped her at her own house & then came home to bed.
